About Bermuda

Things to consider before looking for work in Bermuda
Opportunities can be found in the hospitality industry

Bermuda’s rule of thumb where jobs are concerned is that if there is a Bermudian ready and able to do the job, an employer may not hire a non-Bermudian. Work permits are strictly controlled, and the Immigration Department is diligent in making sure that those non-Bermudians who do work here do so for short periods of time only. That means that there are few jobs in Bermuda available to outsiders, and most of them are highly-skilled job categories. Most work permits are issued for periods ranging between one and three years, and renewal, while possible, should not be taken for granted. Visitors are not permitted to apply for work permits while they are in Bermuda.

Having established that, today long- term residency is not an option, the short term benefits have great appeal to those looking for employment in Bermuda. Geographically this mid-Atlantic sub-tropical paradise offers great weather and close proximity to the United States and Canada. Water sports and golf are available on days off for the actively inclined and Bermuda's beautiful beaches are great stress relievers.

Bermuda offers guest workers a memorable experience
International Business is the largest employer of Guest Workers in Bermuda.
Economically, the wages are high as befitting the third ranked wealthiest country in the world, and there is no personal income tax. However, while the standard of living is high, as to be expected, so is the cost of living. High rents reflect the capitalistic value of supply and demand and consumer costs are a reflective of import taxes.

Good Private and Public education is available, but the short term work permit requirements, naturally discourage couples with two or more children.

There are over 10,000 international business' registered in Bermuda; over 300 of these have a physical presence on the Island. Bermuda cannot meet the labour needs of this expanding global business sector. Accountants, in particular, are in constant demand.

Bermuda's tourist industry needs a constant supply of hospitality workers. In both of these sectors there is potential work opportunities. For an employee to obtain a work permit it is necessary for the Bermuda based employer to apply to the Bermuda Immigration Department for permission.

The Bermudian culture, a synthesis of British, American and Carribean influences, is renowned for its politeness and civility. As such Bermuda's contract workers are referred to as "guest workers", remindful always that a good guest, at home or abroad, is always welcome.
