Bermuda Railway Trail

"Rattle & Shake" for 22 miles!
One of the best ways to see Bermuda is on the government protected Bermuda Railway Trail. The trail closely follows the old Bermuda Railway, in operation from 1931 to the mid 40s and stretches 22 miles from St. George's to Somerset. There were 44 stations along the Railway, some still standing. The trail is not overly strenuous so everyone can enjoy the pathways and the Trail can be walked in segments. ‘Tribe Roads’ which typically are perpendicular to the Railway, access the South Shore, Hamilton Harbour and North Shore.

There are a number of walking tours and bike tours, as well as historic forts, homes and museums along the way. A good online resource for the old Bermuda Railway can be found at www.bermudarailway.net. A fabulous guide book for the backroads of Bermuda is 'Hiking Bermuda' by Cecile and Stephen Davidson.
Fantasea Bicycling

This is a great tour for the active visitor to see some of the little known views of Bermuda, get a little exercise, and a well deserved beach break. Enjoy a shore line cruise to the exotic 9 Beaches Resort in the rural West end of Bermuda, where you will be provided a 21-speed mountain bike, riding instruction and safety information for a guided cycle tour along the original Bermuda Railway Trail. Commentary, point of interest, spectacular views, stunning seascapes, lush gardens with exotic flora and fauna are all part of the 5-8 mile journey. Along the route you will visit Fort Scaur or a 17th century family estate and at the end cool off in the Bermuda waters at 9 Beaches.

"Hiking Bermuda, 20 Nature Walks and Day Hikes"

Hiking Bermuda by Cecile Davidson is a 160 page guide book updated in 2006 with extensive content on Bermuda's back roads and the Bermuda Railway Trail. Wonderful for those self-guided enthusiasts who want to explore and experience Bermuda for themselves. It is available at stores and retail shops around the island.

'A great resource for those wanting to explore Bermuda's hidden gems on foot.' Shape Magazine.

'I recommend Cecile Davidson's guide to Bermuda's back roads.' HolidayMaker Carlson Wagonlit.
