Helmet Diving

Helmet Diving
Bermuda is a perfect place for diving and Helmet Diving has been an exciting part of Bermuda’s water sports activities for almost 60 years. Helmet Diving as a visitor attraction was first started in 1947 by Bronson Hartley, who built his first diving helmet in 1930 at age ten. The undersea walk has been imitated in other islands, but here it is at its best. The helmet works like a glass turned upside down and lead holds the open end down. The air is cupped underneath as it simply rest on ones shoulders. You can even reach inside. Your head stays dry and you can wear glasses or contacts while you view the fascinating marine life. The ability to walk and to breathe is the only requirement to experience our tropical reef ecosystem.

There are two bell diving operators on the island each with their own style and underwater features. Each operator has different helmets as well as different dive locations nearer or further from shore. Some have a photography service. Most offer wet suits when the water is cooler, and some even have fish you can pet and hold. All operate in less than 15 feet of water and are inspected and certified by the relevant authorities. None require you to breathe through a tube, hold your breath or swim at the surface watching the fish way below. Think outside the box!
Hartley's Helmet Diving
Hartley’s Helmet Diving is Bermuda’s premier undersea walk. Greg Hartley, who’s family started helmet diving over 75 years ago, had his first dive at age 3. His friends, Stormin Norman the Snapper, Queen Latifa the Angelfish, Franklin the Goldentailed Moray, Gollum the Squirrelfish, E.T.Puffer and many more are all finning back and forth waiting for you. Their reef is just under 2 miles out, half way to the pristine waters of Bermuda’s barrier reef, yet only 10ft deep. Have your digital photo taken while holding Stormin. Great for all ages 5-85, meek or macho, certified or non-swimmers.
Triangle Diving
Triangle Diving is the only dive shop serving the east end waters of Bermuda. Whether wreck or reef diving, an unforgettable underwater experience awaits you. The pristine reefs of the south breaker are only fifteen minutes away in our newly converted 37' high speed Hatteras! Dive the massive swim throughs at Watchill Park or the "Cathedral" an undersea cavern, teeming with schools of glassy sweepers. Swim with six foot tarpon at "Pandora's Box" and view the majestic walls of hard and soft corals. The great cargo steamers, the "Rita Zovetta", the "Kate" and the "Pelinaion" also rest in these waters, encrusted with over 60 years of exquisite coral growth, haunted by massive groupers, eels, and all manner of reef fish. Come open the treasure chest!
