Charities

Bermuda’s Long History of Giving
Bermuda has a long history of charitable giving. The 350 or so charities that are registered with Bermuda’s Registrar (the law here insists you register if you collect money from the public) are a diverse and vibrant group of organizations serving every segment of society. They include some of the major cultural, health and educational institutions of Bermuda, as well as a wide array of small, neighbourhood-based organisations, and all kinds of charities in between in size and scope.

These charities provide essential services to people who live in Bermuda, and also contribute to employment and the economy. They play a vital role in addressing Bermuda’s most pressing needs, contributing to community health and vitality, and providing a better quality of life for the island's citizens.

The 206 charities reported totals of $166.4 million in annual revenues and $154.8 million in annual expenses. This includes one health organization – the Bermuda Hospitals Board – that reported $111.6 million in revenues and about $109.8 million in expenses.

Health or Education is the Biggest Draw, Depending…
If the Hospitals Board is included, the health subsector is by far the largest, with 67 percent of the total revenues reported. However, if it is excluded, education becomes the largest category, with $12.5 in revenues and 23 percent of the remaining revenues.

Art and Sport Get Over $13 m
The 30 reporting arts organizations together add another $8 million in revenues, with recreation and sports following (25 charities with revenues totalling $5.3 million).

Churches Need not Register
Churches in Bermuda are not required to register as charities. While 12 organizations coded as religious are included with reported revenues totalling $2.1 million, these revenues do not include charitable dollars given to Bermuda churches. (In the United States, churches receive over 50% of total charitable contributions.)

Ross "Blackie" Talbot Charity Classic

Since 1993, Bermudian Charities have been the recipients of this fundraiser, and each year's donations have surpassed the previous one. Such is the legacy of Ross "Blackie" Talbot. His spirit of giving will live on in the charitable foundation established in his name. The tournament usually takes place March/April.

St. Baldrick's Day
This international charity began on a bet between three reinsurance executives who decided to help kids with cancer. Since many Cancer kids are bald, the executives decided shaving their heads for cash would be a winner! The first St. Baldrick's Day (on St. Patrick's Day) on March 17th, 2000 over $104,000 had been raised. Since then over $12 million for children with cancer has been raised worldwide. This year Christine D and Andrea Thorpe are in line to be shaved in Bermuda! Well done!
