Schools & Education

Education is a Big Priority for Bermuda
Bermuda’s Ministry of Education & Development governs a public school system which includes two senior secondary schools, five middle schools, 18 primary schools, 12 preschools, two special schools and a junior college. There are also several private schools in Bermuda. Some 62% of Bermuda’s children go to public schools, while 36% go to private schools.

For a country which boasts an infrastructure, especially a financial infrastructure, the equal of any in the world, education has to be a big priority. Our Government spends more on educating our children than on anything else except taking care of the health of Bermudians.

Our School Children Wear Uniforms
Among the many sights that intrigue first-time visitors to Bermuda are thousands of schoolchildren in crisp uniforms. From the time a child enters primary school at the compulsory age of 5, until leaving secondary school at the minimum age of 16, uniforms are mandatory with each school identified by its own color skirt, jacket, trousers and tie.

Many Bermudian Students Study Abroad
The 2000 census found that 368 of Bermuda’s young men and women were studying overseas. Most who go overseas for tertiary-level education go to universities in the United States, but some go to Canada or the United Kingdom. As Bermuda’s laws are based on those of the UK, those seeking law degrees are most likely to study in the UK.

Below is a list of both public and private secondary schools (High school S1-S4 are equivilent to Grades 9-12). For Government Pre-Schools (Preschool students are generally children ages 4 and under), Primary (Primary school P1-P6 are equivilent to Kindergarten - Grade 5) and Middle Schools (Middle school M1-M3 are equivilent to Grades 6-8) click here.

Bermuda Technical High School

Technical expertise is essential to initiate, improve and maintain a prosperous community. The need for homegrown technical talent in Bermuda has never been greater. Technical/vocational education demands high standards, builds self–esteem, respect, character and is appealing to our students presently failing education. Our mission is to re-introduce technical/vocational education for Bermudians to ensure that they are able to reach their full potential.
