Public Holidays 2009 in Bermuda
Holidays in Bermuda are a time to relax, have fun and celebrate

Bermuda has been long recognized as a great holiday destination. Many people come from far and wide to enjoy lazing on our beaches, playing the beautifully manicured eight public and private golf courses dotted across the island, and sailing or swimming in the azure blue waters of the Atlantic. It goes without saying that the people of Bermuda tend to enjoy their holidays, too, especially those nine legal public holidays when they may not necessarily leave the island, but participate in many activities that will be of interest to visitors. These include the six public holidays celebrated almost everywhere ~ New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Labour Day, Remembrance Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day ~ plus a few others...

Bermuda Day (May 24) is considered the first day of summer and usually to first day of the year to jump in the ocean! There is a parade in Hamilton where locals and visitors line the streets in celebration; the first Bermuda Fitted Dinghy race of the season with the first "raft ups" of the season! The party is on! This year it falls on a Monday, May 25th and will be a recognised holiday.

Although The Queen’s Birthday is no longer an official holiday, The Queen's Birthday Parade will be held on Saturday, June 13th, 2009 at The Flag Pole and Front Street Hamilton. The Parade celebrates the official birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The origins of the Parade dates back to the reign of King George III when members of the British Household Division mounted a ceremonial Parade in London. Ever since, a day has been set aside as the Sovereign’s Official Birthday. We observe the tradition in Bermuda by holding a ceremonial military Parade to mark the occasion. On Monday, June 15th the Tall Ships will Parade out of Hamilton Harbour on to Charleston, NC as part of the 400th Anniversary Celebration.

Emancipation Day is on Thursday, July 30th, 2009, and the next day, July 31st, is set aside as Somers (Sir George, of course) Day. On these two days the island literally closes down for the Annual Cup Match Classic, a cricket match between the Somerset Cricket Club and St. George’s Cricket Club. This year's Match will be in Somerset.

A new holiday has been added ~ National Heroes' Day which is scheduled for Monday, October 12 in honour of Dame Lois Browne Evans.

On public holidays and on Saturdays and Sundays, Government offices, banks and offices are closed. Buses and ferries run on limited schedules. However, all sightseeing attractions, cycle liveries, most restaurants and a variety of sporting activities are available. Year round, most shops are closed on Sundays; however, most grocery stores are open in the afternoon.

Welcome, Guest!
