FILM SERIES
This film series will explore the documentaries made by local filmmakers. Topics are as diverse as each director’s vision. Each film will be screened at BNG on Wednesdays at 12:30 pm and at Bermuda College on the following Thursday evening at 6:30 pm in Room G301 North Hall. The series will conclude with a moderated forum led by film professor Dr. Sajni Tolaram, with the directors of the films.
Films at BNG are free for members and $5 Non-members.
Films at Bermuda College are free.
DVDs of films will be available for purchase at each film venue.

Bermuda Five Centuries, Episode 1: The Story Begins: 1503-1684, Dir. Reimar Fiedler, 2000 (30 min.)
In this episode, the discovery and early colonization of Bermuda is told through references to historical artefacts and literature. Learn more about the Bermuda Company and Bermuda’s economic development, including the advent of slavery.

Episode 2 delves deeper into Bermuda’s involvement with the African Diaspora, the US- British War of 1812, convicts on hulk ships building fortifications to protect the island from the Spanish, and the education and emancipation of Blacks.

This is the abridged version of an important dialogue on race relations in Bermuda.

The Lion and the Mouse, Dir. Lucinda Spurling, 2009 (80 min.)
This story of America and Bermuda looks back at the birth of America and the deciding conflicts and characters that have shaped the last four centuries. Bermuda was able to adapt its mid-Atlantic location to both military and trade pursuits and to overcome insignificance in size, and vulnerability to become the place, that U.S. President William Howard Taft was to immortalize in his now famous words, “Never in global history has such a small country played such a large role in International Affairs.”

When Voices Rise, Dir. Errol Williams, 2002 (74 min.)
This important, but little-known story of dismantling segregation in Bermuda in the 1950s is the subject of this film. Working in secret, the Progressive Group organized the 1959 Theatre Boycott to end segregation in movie theatres on Hamilton. Director Williams captures the spirit of liberation and rebellion in Bermuda’s civil rights era.

Presented as an historical timeline, our permanent exhibition follows the artistic, historical and cultural development of Bermuda through its decorative and fine arts from 1624 to the present day. The Gallery’s Permanent Collection is complemented by significant private loans focusing on Bermuda’s early decorative arts of furniture and silverwork.
