| Boxing Day ~ What is it? |
The holiday's roots can be traced back to Britian, where Boxing Day is also known as St. Stephen's Day. several hundred years ago it was the practice to give give a present or Christmas box to those who had worked for them throughout the year.
In England, it was common practice for the servants to carry boxes to their employers when they arrived for their day's work on the first working day after Christmas. Their employers would then put coins in the boxes as special end-of-year gifts. This can be compared with the modern day concept of Christmas bonuses. The servants carried boxes for the coins, hence the name Boxing Day. It is celebrated in Great Britain and in most areas settled by the English (the U.S. is the major exception), including Canada, Australia, Bermuda and New Zealand.
