Newport Bermuda Race 2008 ~ June 20th

Crossing the Gulf Stream can be tricky due to the extreme temperature difference between the stream and the slope water to the north. The 300 or so miles from the bottom of the stream to Bermuda are generally most pleasant and known as Happy Valley. Bermuda is guarded on its north and northeast sides by a barrier reef and skirting the reef the yachts round the Northeast Breaker Buoy, Kitchen Shoals and the Spit on the way to the finish line at St. David's Head.

| World Ocean's Day at BUEI ~ June 8 |

World Ocean's Day ~
June 8 |
World Oceans Day is a time to remember the life-giving role of oceans worldwide. This international celebration, declared in 1992 at the United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, has grown from a ripple into a tidal wave of awareness about ocean health.
Bermuda was discovered, settled and developed through the assistance of the sea, so we have a special connection to the ocean. Many species that live in the ocean are being threatened by our actions such as over-fishing and habitat damage. Protection of our oceans starts with you! Do you know that an aluminum can lasts for 200 years? six-pack plastic holders for 400 years? Disposable diapers for 450 years? Go here for more information.
Come see our newest exhibit, Healthy Oceans, Healthy Humans, at BUEI.

| Glow Worm Cruises ~ June19th & 20th |
Bermuda has its own spectacular fireworks display and it doesn’t require firecrackers! Bermuda’s fireworm or glow worm produces bioluminescent displays during its mating activities. Through the months of June, July, August and September, between two and three nights after a full moon, after sunset this illuminated mating ritual can be witnessed. In calm inlets, bioluminescent fireworms swarm to the surface of the sea and engage in sensuous dances and as they do, they give off a luminescent glow that lights up the water. Lasting only a few minutes, the dance is repeated the following month. The Glow Worm Cruise leaves from the BUEI Dock and heads to a calm area to witness this monthly ritual.
Members $35.00 & Non Members $50.00 – Must be over 14 year of age. Please snacks and drinks. No alcohol allowed on boat. Don’t forget windbreakers, sweatshirts, jackets and your camera.
To purchase tickets please call 297-7314 - Credit cards accepted.

This year’s Independence Day Celebration in Bermuda will be on Saturday, June 28, 2008 from 6-10 p.m. at Moresby Plain. It has been made possible by the generosity of our sponsors, especially our premium sponsors – ACE, Bacardi, Renaissance Re, XL and the Ministry of Tourism and Transport. I would also like to mention our gold sponsors - AIG, Arch Capital Group, Butterfield Bank, Endurance, Fidelity, Flagstone Re, Montpelier Re and Platinum Re. Over 50 of Bermuda’s best charities will provide much of the manpower to make this event a success. Each participating charity will receive a minimum donation of $500 and have the opportunity to attract new members, which means ongoing benefits into the future.
