| Glow Warm Cruise ~ May 11 & 12 |
Bermuda’s fireworm or glow worm produces bioluminescent displays during its mating activities. Through the months of June, July, August and September, between two and three nights after a full moon, after sunset this illuminated mating ritual can be witnessed. In calm inlets, bioluminescent fireworms swarm to the surface of the sea and engage in sensuous dances and as they do, they give off a luminescent glow that lights up the water. Lasting only a few minutes, the dance is repeated the following month. The Glow Worm Cruise leaves from the BUEI Dock and heads to a calm area to witness this monthly ritual.
Evening Cruise. $50.00 for non-members and $35.00 for members. Boat leaves from BUEI dock. Children 14 and up permitted. Please snacks and drinks. No alcohol allowed on boat. Don’t forget windbreakers, sweatshirts, jackets and your camera. Call 297-7314 for more information and reservations.

| Portuguese Man-of-War Washing up on Beaches |
The Bluebottle or Portuguese Man-of-War is not a single animal but a colony of four kinds of highly modified individuals (polyps). The float is a bottle or pear-shaped sac that can exceed 15 cm. It is mainly blue, though its upper margin may show delicate shades of green or pink. It is a living, muscular bag that secretes its own gas, which is similar to air. The float may project either to the left or to the right; the left-handed forms sail to the right of the wind and vice versa. Thus, if the sailing angle of one form leads to its stranding on the shore, the others sailing to the opposite side of the wind may escape.
The Bermuda Department of Parks has issued a warning and encourage swimmers to use the North Shore beaches and parks as there is a lower risk there than on South Shore.
If stung, do the following: rinse with salt water and remove any visible tentacles from the skin using a glove, towel or stick;
treat the affected areas with vinegar;
apply warm water or warm compress;
remove any of the remaining tentacles by applying shaving cream with something like a tongue depressor stick or a credit card
If you start to lose consciousness or have difficulty breathing get immediate attention by calling 911.
