 Welcome to Bermuda!

21st World Rugby Classic 2008 ~ November 8 - 15

beachflight

The Classic offers spectators the unique opportunity of mixing freely with the international players, something which is sadly lacking in the current game. There is singing and dancing in the Tent Tavern, to the music of Ireland’s top party band the Heartbeats, each match evening, thus adding to what has become a rugby event with an enviable reputation.

South Africa, the defending champions, will be joined by their Southern Hemisphere compatriots, Argentina, Australia and New Zealand while the Classic Lions (England, Ireland, Scotland & Wales), France, Canada and the United States will represent the Northern Hemisphere.

Over the years Bermuda has attracted the great names of international rugby to its shores with World Cup winning captains Nick Farr-Jones (Australia, 1991), Francois Pienaar (South Africa 1995), John Eales (Australia 1999) and Martin Johnson (England 2003) recent visitors.

The Classic is considered to be one of the most enjoyable events in the rugby calendar mixing exciting and entertaining rugby with the world-famous social side of the game, and all on the wonderful islands of Bermuda, famous for its beaches, golf courses and Dark & Stormies! (Rum & Ginger Beer).

Being the low season for air travel, allied to a special offer by the Classic’s host hotel, the Fairmont Southampton Resort, a visit to the World Rugby Classic is also an inexpensive trip for what is a unique experience.

All the games are played at the National Sports Centre, just five minutes by taxi from the capital Hamilton or a 15 minute taxi ride from the host hotel, the Fairmont Southampton Resort situated overlooking the South Shore beaches.

And there are packages to suit all pockets ranging from daily admission of $25 up to the VIP facility, the Members Tent where prices start at $225 per day.

November 1 & 2

Congratulations Matt Reed and Jodie Swallow!

In one of the most beautiful yet technical courses in all of triathlon, Escape to Bermuda covers the islands of Bermuda from west to east. On Sunday, November 2nd the course begins with a one-mile swim at Royal Naval Dockyard. Competitors swim through warm turquoise waters into the King’s Stairs below the Dockyard Clock tower. After transition, the course takes the athletes along South Road 24 miles across the entire span of the country and past some of the most scenic views and vistas in the world. The six-mile run begins and ends in King’s Square in the historic town of St. George’s. The run is demanding as it follows the unforgiving hills and winding roads through St. George’s Parish. At the finish-line in King’s Square, the heart of St. George’s, competitors are greeted with cheers from local Bermudians who line the streets. Once through the finish, each athlete is presented with a finisher’s medal. Set against the natural beauty and historic sites of Bermuda, this thrilling triathlon is a virtual postcard of paradise. The Awards Ceremony is in St. George's and the Beach Party at the Fairmont Southampton.
