Bermuda Memories - Jill Amos Raine Studio

Bermuda Fitted Dingy
I painted this from my friends’ garden on St. David’s Island. They have a beautiful view of St. Georges, the harbour being a setting for many a sailboat race. I chose to depict the Bermuda Fitted Dinghy in full sail as she swept gracefully into my space.

These boats were originally designed by Bermuda’s pilots for optimum speed. They were used to race to ships that were arriving off our shores. At first they were rowed, and powered by sails that were un-stayed. Later they were fitted with wires, thus giving the boat its current name: Fitted Dinghy. Today, they take part in exciting races with large crews who are eliminated overboard, one by one, as needed to create more speed!

Bermudiana
On a bright spring morning at Clearwater Beach, I was struck by the clear sparkling water and the peaceful, warm beach. As I sat painting, I dropped my brush. What a discovery….There, right under my feet, were the delightful wild flowers known as Bermudiana. These flowers are only found in the island of Bermuda. From every nook and cranny, they surface for a few wonderful weeks in the spring….so, they got painted into my picture!

Colors in Clusters
In Bermuda’s blinding sun, the amazing array of home hues can be staggering. Bermudians love bright and cheerful cottage colours to contrast with their sparkling white roofs. In this painting, I have tried to capture the intensity of these colours, heightened on this particular day by the Island’s clear, unpolluted light.

Convict Bay
This is the view from my living room in St. Georges! How lucky can you get? Words cannot express the beauty of this scene, although as the title suggests, not all people from the past with this view, regarded themselves as lucky!

Devils Hole
You can find this view on a bend on Harrington Sound Road. It is a very special place for me because I once lived on the tiny island with a cable car, to the far left in the picture. The reflections here are always a delight! This was a large painting which needed two painting boards to support the work. I was perched on the rocks near the Devil’s Hole Aquarium.

Dusk - St. Georges
There is something very special about the soft and muted colours as dusk envelops picturesque St. George’s. I did this painting on a hillside overlooking the town and experienced with the setting of the sun, a great sense of peace.

Old Maids Lane
17th Century St. George’s offers narrow winding streets with fascinating names such as this one. On location, I had to constantly move my easel sideways every time a car needed to pass! Notice the typical walled gardens full of fruit trees and flowers, which are scattered among the town’s houses.

Safe Harbour
Sailors have found refuge in this sheltered St. George’s Harbour for hundreds of years. This view looks towards the Cut, a narrow channel which allows cruise ships and yachts to slide into their tranquil haven. In this painting, I have tried to show the cleanliness and sparkle of this safe little harbour.
