Valentine’s Day Date Night in Bermuda
by Brigitta Wohlmuth
So you’re in Bermuda this February, want to do something really romantic with your significant other but need a little help? We got you covered, hence our magazine cover this month. I’m sure you noticed the handsome couple looking oh-so in love on their way to somewhere amazing. The dreamy setting only enhances the feeling between these two and, in case you were wondering where exactly they are, it’s Chancery Lane they’re walking down.
Chancery Lane is probably one of the most romantic side-roads in the City of Hamilton and a great place to start your date night. The brick-paved alley takes you from Reid to Front Street and along the way there are a number of magical little surprises. The steps are decorated with painted poetry by artists of the Chewstick Foundation, and overhead a public art installation by local designer Tiago Garcia brings “a level of intimacy to an already quaint public setting” with over 450 lightbulbs illuminating the way.
Now, where to go from here you ask? There are a couple of really nice restaurants on this street, both of them under the same ownership, but with totally different themes. Ruby Murray’s is the Island’s newest Indian restaurant and no ordinary curry house. Named after an Irish singer from the 1950s (it’s also cockney slang for curry ), their menu is devoted to the flavours of Southern India and they even have an Indian Tapas-Style menu. Or, if curry is not your thing, you could try Bistro J, an intimate, french-style restaurant with regular rotating black-board specials and an awesome wine list.
After dinner you might want to catch a show at the Bermuda Festival of the Performing Arts. The Festival features a diverse selection of award-winning performing artists from around the globe with a sprinkling of local talents as well. From classical to contemporary music, the programme has something for everyone, so be sure to check it out (visit bermudafestival.org) and book your tickets in advance! Many shows will be held at the Earl Cameron Theatre within the City Hall, so you can easily walk there after your meal.
