Wedding Preparation

Preparing for your Wedding in Bermuda
Getting married in Bermuda couldn't be easier - providing you follow these simple requirements.

Legal requirements
There is no required length of stay before or after marrying in Bermuda but you must be 18 or over at the time of the ceremony and have completed the "Notice of Intended Marriage" form. You can request this from your wedding planner or the Bermuda Registrar General's Office (441-297-7709 or 441-297-7707) or click here to download the form in PDF format.

Note that the form must be printed on white legal size (8.5" x 14") paper to be accepted. Fill it out and mail it back to either your wedding planner or the Registrar General, Government Administration Building, 30 Parliament Street, Hamilton HM 12 Bermuda, along with a cashier's check or bank draft made payable to the Accountant General, Hamilton, Bermuda, for US$210.00 (plus $21.00 for the certificate). Divorcees must provide copies of their final divorce decree or Decree Absolute with the completed Notice of Intended Marriage form.

The Registry staff will publish the notice in two of the local newspapers. A period of 15 days must elapse from the date of receipt of the Notice by the Registry before the Registrar General may issue the marriage license. The license must be issued within three months of the receipt of the Notice by the Registrar General.

Marriage licenses are valid for three months, and can be picked up at the Registrar's office by you or a designated person.

Two witnesses aged 18 years or over must witness your marriage license. These can be supplied Monday through Friday by the Registrar's Office or through your wedding planner.

Within one month of your wedding you will receive an official Marriage Certificate that is recognized and legal worldwide, although you may wish to register with your local town or city hall.

Church weddings
Many of Bermuda's beautiful churches are available for weddings for a fee. Note that divorced persons cannot be married in any of the Roman Catholic churches in Bermuda. However church weddings for divorcees can sometimes be arranged by special request with the minister concerned at other churches such as Anglican, Methodist, Presbyterian, AME, etc., although many require prior counseling of the couple by the Minister.

Calling of Banns
Only British subjects resident in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland who intend to marry a British subject resident in Bermuda may have their banns called in church. These banns would be called in their normal place of worship and the banns of the British subject resident in Bermuda.

Minors
Anyone aged 16 to 18 wishing to marry in Bermuda must have the written consent of both parents, the surviving parent or legal guardian. No marriage may be performed, if either or both of the persons getting married are under the age of 16 years at the time of the ceremony.

The "Notice of Intended Marriage" form, or other form of written consent, can be signed in the presence of a staff member at the Registry General, or in the presence of a Notary Public. Where the person is not on the island, he must sign the form before a Notary Public or attach a written form of consent witnessed by a Notary Public to the completed Notice of Intended Marriage.
