By Kim Swan, J.P. Teaching Professional

This November marks the first month 45 years ago when Port Royal Golf Course first opened its doors in 1970.  A great vision was birthed as a result of the economic and social challenges Bermuda faced at that time. We as Bermudians can truly be proud as Port Royal Golf Course represents an “ Awesome Legacy in Golf Public”worlwide.

Our fore-bearers who envisaged Port Royal had a multi-tiered agenda:-

1. Create a world class championship golf course for the public

2. Provide a marketing/amenity tool for tourism/hotels to promote golf

3. Address the social inequity in Bermuda by the legacy of segregated laws

On the 45th Anniversary of Port Royal Golf Course, it is fair to look back and say to those forefathers which include the late Reginald Tucker, George Wardman, Hubert Smith and others as say – Job Well Done – for Port Royal has throughout 5 decades from 1970 – 2015 held its own on the world stage as one of the best public golf courses in the world.  Imagine a public golf course that can boast playing host to Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, Ernie Els, Angel Cabrera, Bubba Watson, Justin Rose, Martin Kaymer, Adam Scott,  Rory McIlroy and many others between 1970 and 2015.

Respectfully, Dr.  Hon. Ewart Brown also deserves credit for his vision and commitment to build on the solid legacy of Port Royal, by attracting the PGA of America to bring the very best in the game to Bermuda via the PGA Grand Slam of Golf. A partnership which took the soliid foundation of Port Royal to the next level and addressed Bermuda’s waning awareness in the golbal tourism marketplace.

Today we the people of Bermuda have a well established public golf course – Port Royal Golf Course – which is unquestionably ranked among the best public courses on planet earth. Our facilities and conditions meet the standards to not only host, but have played host to the world’s best players – a great reason to put Port Royal on your bucket list today.

Today, 45 years on, it is safe to say, that Port Royal Golf Course is a golf course that embraces the spirit of Bermuda – Today I proclaim Port Royal Golf Course as ‘The Peoples Golf Course’. Especially,   for the social outreach Port Royal Golf Course has been able to engender during its entire 45 years.

We invite the public to make plans to visit Port Royal Golf Course for a game of golf, to learn to play from our Teaching Golf Professional or to enjoy the ambiance provided by Livio Ferigo of Bella Visat Grill. Come enjoy the exquisite views while relaxing over a sumptuous meal or your favourite beverage.
