The East End – Special Events in July
by Kristin White
Festivals, sporting matches, concerts … summer in Bermuda means there’s loads to do every week! And although much of the action is more centrally located, the East End still has its great line-up of fun events. If you’re lucky enough to be on island on any of these dates, be sure to find your way there.
Portuguese Festival of the Holy Spirit, St. George’s Town Square (pictured above) Saturday, June 30 and Sunday, July 1, 5-11pm both days
Bermuda has a large Portuguese community and through food, music, religious processions, and floral displays, guests are able to experience and celebrate Portuguese culture. This is one of my favourite East End events. Do not miss the fresh, hot malasadas (donuts)!
Cup Match Extravaganza St. George’s Town Square Friday, July 20, 6.30pm onwards
Centred around a century-old cricket match between St. George’s and Somerset Cricket Clubs, Cup Match is Bermuda’s biggest summer holiday. Last year, the game was hosted in the East End, so for 2018 will head to Somerset, but the annual celebration in honour of the St. George’s team takes place as usual right on Town Square. Live music, food, and fun for the whole family – emceed by yours truly! Wear light blue and dark blue, the colours of the St. George’s team! I SUPPOSE if you must cheer for Somerset, put on red and blue instead. www.corpstgeorge.bm
Groundswell Lionfish Tournament & Festival, Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences ***Postponed until September**
Lionfish are a scourge on our oceans. This invasive fish has no natural predators, reproduces like crazy, and gobbles up all of the tiny sealife that keep our reefs healthy. During Groundswell’s annual tournament, teams of lionfish hunters head out to gather up as many as they can find, then bring them back to BIOS for an ‘Eat Em to Beat Em’ cookout and family-friendly festival. www.reefspect.com
Eastern Counties Cricket, Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club Saturday, July 21, 11am onwards
County cricket is another Bermuda tradition. And whether you go to watch the cricket, play crown and anchor, get some conch fritters, drink with friends or all of the above, it’s one of the best days out you can have in Bermuda.
