Between 1885 and 1900, artists began to discover Bermuda's inspiring scenery, using the islands' vibrant hues in their color palette. Winslow Homer arrived in 1899 to paint the local scenery using watercolors to capture the islands' luminous beauty.
Following his Buffalo Exhibition of 1901, which included his Bermuda inspired work, many other artists began to travel to Bermuda, laying the foundation for the diverse art community that exists today.
Many other influential artists made the island of Bermuda their motif also. These include Alfred Stieglitz (who never set foot on Bermuda) and his wife Georgia O'Keeffe. Stieglitz's influence had much impact on Bermuda. As a direct result of his efforts, many other painters and renowned photographers found their way to Bermuda.
Today there seems to be a revival of the visual arts in Bermuda, not only among artists who visit the islands, but also among those who make it their home. Bermuda’s emerging arts scene is highlighted every two years by the Bermuda National Gallery’s Bacardi Limited Biennial. This is considered to be the most significant exhibition in the calendar for Bermuda artists. Artists must be Bermudian or resident in Bermuda to be eligible for the show. Bermuda houses many talented artists, many of whom can be visited at their studio/galleries island-wide.

| The Bacardi Biennial 2008 at The Bermuda National Gallery |
|

The Bermuda National Gallery and Bacardi Limited are proud to present the 8th Biennial, in association with Royal Caribbean International, which runs from April 25 to September 4 and features 86 works by 41 local artists, selected by an international jury from more than 250 submissions from 68 artists.
The Biennial comprises of work completed by Bermudian and resident artists between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2007. The exhibition was open to all Bermudian artists on the Island or overseas as well as foreign nationals who were resident in Bermuda for at least six months during the competition period.
The distinguished international jurors for this year’s Biennial were Mark Krisco, Artist, Curator, and instructor, Art Institute of Chicago and Franklin Sirmans, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Menil Collection, Houston, Texas.
In a joint statement, they explained: “We have particularly focused on the artists that have not hesitated beyond comfortable boundaries; artists whose work has led them to a place outside comfortable boundaries – a place that may even seem “foreign” to them. It has been our experience that it is such artists who “go out on a limb” create art that comes from a place deeper within themselves. Far beyond competence and ego, it is a place that all viewers will relate to aesthetically and soulfully.”
